About me
For any of you who innocently wandered onto this page, Rent is a rock musical currently playing on Broadway. It was written by Jonathon Larson and directed by Michael Greif. In a nutshell, the story is about a group of artists in NYC dealing with AIDS (that doesn't do it justice, but it's the gist of it). It's roughly based on the opera "La Boheme." It's currently touring and playing on Broadway. I highly, highly recommend seeing it, but if you can't do that, buy the soundtrack (you can follow the plot just from that).
Once upon a time there was a student named Miaka (no, that's not her real name, but that's what people call her on the 'net). For as long as she could remember, she loved fan-fiction. So when she became a Renthead, she skipped off to find some fan-fiction. But lo and behold, there was no place that archived Rent 'fic! She could find a few 'fics here and there, but not enough to feed her addiction. So Miaka sat down and thought: "Why don't I make my own page?" And so she got out her HTML hammer and web saw and began to go to work.
Fan-fiction has been around for quite a while now. It's basically people writing stories about their favorite fandoms. Fan-fiction ranges throughout all sorts of mediums-sci-fi stuff like Star Trek, anime, soap operas, book series, and even musicals, including Rent. Yes, it's legal, provided that the author writes a disclaimer at the top of the story explaining that they're just borrowing the characters and concepts. With the exception of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, I've yet to see any authors/creators/etc. object to fan-fiction.
At this point, I need
any fan-fiction dealing with Rent. Parodies, crossovers, drama, angst,
you name it. (Just make sure it does include Rent in some way...no
Les Mis or Sailor Moon 'fics accepted ^_^). You can e-mail it to
me in either .txt or .doc form to Miaka1164@aol.com.
If you can't send file attachments, just paste the story into an e-mail.
Please, nothing beyond an R rating. Also, if you could rate the 'fics
yourself, I'd be grateful because it saves me from having to do it.
(8/19/01) I'm starting
to get a lot more material than I used to, meaning I have to put in more
actual time to complete the site. From now on, if you're a new author
and you have multiple stories to send, please send them in a .zip file.
If you have no idea how to make one, don't sweat it, but if you can, please
do. Also, if you have a completed story, please send it as the entire
thing as opposed to individual parts (you can still send me uncompleted
stuff, though).
Also, try to put something
about the fact that it's Rent or fan-fic in the subject line of your e-mail.
I'm getting an insane amount of junk mail lately, and while I don't think
I've accidentally deleted 'fic yet, I'd prefer to keep it that way.
(9/3/01) PLEASE include
the title name and your penname somewhere in the e-mail. Otherwise
I end up with a lot of "Untitled"s.
About
Incomplete Stories
I am willing to post
stories that are incomplete. Just make sure to send me the next parts.
How
often this page is updated
I usually put up stories
when I get them, so it's not as if I wait until I get a certain amount.
However, in my extreme laziness it usually takes me a week or so to get
stuff up after I get it. The same goes for the Nitpickers section.
The Rent Fan-Fic Challenge is updated whenever I get a story based off
of it, and the rest is updated at random.
A note about the pathetically huge amount of Mark 'fics (and on this site)
I honestly have no idea, and it's not me. The reason why there are so many Mark 'fics on this site is because that's what people have written. I guess out of all of the characters his story is left most open. Still, can't someone write about the Squeegee Man or something? (::gets brutally killed by Mark fans::) Owch.
About
actor 'fics
Someone actually asked
me about this today. It's a bit of a fine line. First of all,
the purpose of this site is for RENT 'fics. On the other hand, the
actors are a big part of the show. So I guess my answer is that the
story would have to have something to do with Rent. (A 'fic about
Maggee Benjamin's first performance is okay, a 'fic about Trey Ellet's
childhood isn't). Secondly, the actors are real people. I will
not post anything that has to do with sex or even romance between two of
the actors. The actors do deserve some degree of privacy.
About
slash
Yup, this site does
have slash, most of which is between Mark and Roger (for those who don't
know, slash are fan-fics which involve the romance of two people of the
same sex). Sometimes Mark and Roger 'fics are just labeled as M/R.
Most of it is labeled in the description. If you have a problem with
it, don't read it. Simple as that.

You Have Been Warned
Rent is a fairly mature
show, and the 'fics tend to reflect that. For the most part I've
tried to mark where anything is explicit, but I don't always catch it,
especially when it comes to language. But here's some explanation
of the terms:
language-f-you, etc. Most of the time I
don't catch this.
sexual situations-anything that goes beyond too
much beyond just fading to black. I catch this most of the time,
but not always.
mature situations-this isn't sex (because then
it would be under sexual situations) but it does mean things that are above
your normal PG-13.
NC-17 Fan-Fiction
I looked over my Tripod
agreement the other day, and I don't think I can post NC-17 rated fan-fiction
(meaning sex). There is a clause about posting sexually explicit
material. I don't to a) want to lose my account or b) get into
trouble with the law. Basically, I can't
take anything too graphic. "They quickly discarded their clothes"
is okay, but describing a blowjob in detail isn't. Unfortunately,
the line is pretty fine when it comes to the difference between something
rated R and something rated NC-17. This is one is going to be a judgement
call from me on a case-by-case basis. I just can't think of any other
way to do it.
I'm trying to get some
space somewhere where I can post NC-17 rated fan-fiction. If anyone
has any suggestions, I'd be willing to listen.
Linking
to My Stories
So far I haven't had
a problem with this, and I'm hoping I don't in the future. I don't
mind (and am actually very flattered) if you post the link to my main page
on a webpage or something like that. When I say linking to my stories,
I mean don't directly link to a specific story on the site. The one
exception would be if you were referring to a specific story on a message
board and wanted to link to just that story.
My biggest fear would
be that someone would make a site claiming to be an archive, list a bunch
of stories, and then link them to my space on Tripod. I put a lot
of hard work into the page, guys. Not only would directly linking
kill my bandwidth, but it's more or less stealing the effort I've put into
this page.
If you have a special
situation (ie. you want to set up a page of the Top 5 M/R 'fics), e-mail
me and I'll think about it. Other than that, please be nice to a
busy archivist.
::steps off the soap
box::
Right now I kind-of-sort-of have an Aida page that's in the works, where I keep the Aida fan-fic I'm working on. If anyone else has any, I'd be glad to post it.
Every now and then you'll
hear me rant or mention a Rent bootleg. Yes, they exist. There
are people who will either tape record the show or audio tape it.
No, it's not completely legal. Whether it's ethical is a very big
long debate which I'd rather not get into.
Um, yes I have bootlegs,
but not very many of them, and I'm usually pretty lazy when it comes to
getting to the post office. You're probably better off trying to
get them off of someone else. There are people who will be willing
to copy tapes for newbies. You can find people posting their lists
here.
Don't pay outrageous prices. An ethical trader will only charge you
the amount of money it takes for shipping and the tapes themselves.
No one should be charging you $20 for a tape. $8 is about right for
a video.
::waves:: Hi, I'm Miaka,
and I've loved Rent since I saw it last January on Broadway. Uh...let's
see, my favorite member of the Original Broadway Cast is Adam Pascal and
I'm not sure if I could decide on a favorite character (Mark or Roger,
I guess). My favorite Rent songs are "One Song Glory", "Another Day",
"La Vie Boheme", and "What You Own."
When I'm not listening
to Rent over and over, I'm stressing out about high school and banging
my head against the wall ;;. I also like anime, writing, reading
science fiction and fantasy, playing the piano and bassoon, and bugging
my iguana, Ziggy.
No, my real name is
not Miaka. When I was in eight grade and changing my screen name,
I was really into the Japanese Animation series Fushigi Yuugi, which was
about a Japanese school girl named Miaka. Hence the name. I've
yet to change it just because getting a new e-mail address is a hassle.
Rent Quote of the Moment: "It think it only fair to tell you you just paid for the funeral of the person who killed your dog."-Collins, "What You Own" (yes, that is in "What You Own", but it was cut out on the recording. Too bad, that was one of the funniest lines).
